Lesson Introduction

This lesson was designed to help students strengthen their portrait photography skills while encouraging creativity through lighting and color theory. Students explored how complementary colors can enhance mood, contrast, and visual interest within a portrait. By combining technical camera skills with artistic decision-making, students learned how lighting can transform an image.

Student Activities

1. Portrait Setup and Composition

Students worked in pairs or small groups to create portrait photographs using:

  • A black background to reduce distractions

  • Light sticks as creative lighting tools

  • Nikon cameras to capture portraits with proper exposure and focus

Students experimented with different poses, angles, and light placements to create visually engaging portraits.

2. Color Theory Application

Students selected complementary colors for their light sticks to help enhance their portraits and create stronger visual contrast. Discussions included:

  • Understanding complementary colors

  • How color affects mood and composition

  • Using color intentionally in photography

3. Editing in Adobe Lightroom
